Geo-mapping for Knowledge Sharing Project

Microlinks MapIRG’s Knowledge Management team constructs knowledge-sharing and collaboration tools for a number of key USAID projects, including microLINKS, a website designed to improve the impact of USAID-funded microenterprise programs and activities.

As part of the microLINKS portal, the team is working with simple dynamic geo-mapping tools to display project accomplishments geospatially. The site now features a user-controlled map that represents and links to over 80 USAID-funded microenterprise projects. Users can click on the map pins to find out more about each project.

The map can be viewed here, or by visiting the microLINKS website. More geo-mapping tools are coming soon, be sure to contact the KM team if you have any questions about their use in your projects.

Nishorgo Starts Eco-tour Guide Certification

The New Nation (Bangladesh) has an article on the new professional tour guide certification program at Nishorgo.

From the article:

The two day long certification course included written test and field examination. The board assessed the service quality of the trained eco-tour guides and determined the eligible guides. The eligible guides are divided into two grades. The best guides with advanced interpretation skills are labelled as green and the ones with basic guiding skills are labelled blue. The guides will charge for their services based on their grades. Now the tourists will be able to choose their desired level of guiding facilities or the one that would match their budget.

Video: Operation Clean Sweep

When IRG moved into its new headquarters in downtown Monrovia, Liberia, there was a pressing need for some cleanup on UN Drive, the street on which our staff lives and works. Together with the neighbors, IRG began removing trash, cutting down overgrown weeds, and patching up pot holes. “Operation Clean Sweep” not only reduces the danger posed by open garbage sites, but also provides employment for the local residents.

In this video, Rick Whitaker, IRG’s Chief of Party explains the neighborhood cleanup program.

IRG Awarded Energy Modeling Contract by Saudi Aramco

Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest integrated international oil companies, has awarded IRG a contract to develop an energy modeling system for Saudi Arabia. The contract is based on IRG’s work with the MARKAL (Market Allocation) energy analysis model.

IRG Corporate Vice President Matthew S. Mendis:

The Saudi Aramco contract represents an important foray into the private sector, where it is expected that the demand for energy systems analysis services will increase significantly, particularly in the light of the Bali Accord and increasing concerns for limiting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and addressing climate change. It also represents an opportunity to build on IRG’s MARKAL modeling capabilities for broader applications both in domestic and international markets.

Report on forensics in Trinidad & Tobago

Forensic Technology has published a brief case study describing IRG’s forensics work in Trinidad & Tobago.

With the right people and processes maximizing the technology’s potential, the number of confirmed Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) hits rose dramatically from 11 to 300 in just ten short months!

IRG’s forensics experts were called in by the Government of Trinidad & Tobago to reduce a severe case backlog. They were able to clear a total of 2,350 cases, including 1006 homicides.

This had some important “ripple” effects:

  • By increasing the number of firearms matches, police were able to link multiple crimes to the same gun. As many as 8 violent crimes were linked to a single weapon.
  • The linking of crimes to weapons assisted with the prosecution of “gun library” owners. Under the pressure of being sentenced for all the crimes associated with a particular firearm, library operators would identify all renters of the particular weapon.

Most importantly of all, these actions lead to the prosecution of the correct suspects and provided much needed closure for the families affected by these violent crimes.
